The profession has traditionally used hand techniques to develop representation. There are a vast number of methods, medias, and utensils that combine with a designer’s level of mastery to compose representations.

Sketching captures the idea of the image in mind, often this is not a literal representation of the design. Drawing is more refined, use of more varied media, often is done after the design is more solidified and used for exploring the thesis of the design. Constructed Drawings need the use of drafting tools for particular scales and conventions and the paper type for presentation is important.

Remember personal mastery of a technique is a personal decision in design and representation:

Media Type: Pencil, Color Pencil, Pen, Charcoal, Pastel, Watercolor, Prisma Markers, Paints (oil and acrylic), Paper Type (Matt, Semi-Gloss, Glossy).

Consider your personal drafting tools. What is around or available for use, or that you know how to use. Then what is the technical expertise of the professor and other assistants and what can they help you with?

What is the type of presentation that is being made? What distance and detail is needed? Whom is the audience and why this design?
